Andy Enright ReportsSaab and turbocharging go hand in hand. Although the Swedish company cant claim to offer the first turbocharged production car, they certainly kickstarted the craze for blown muscle with their 99 Turbo of 1977. Almost overnight, an industry was started bolting turbochargers onto all sorts of cars, often with disastrous results. You could even buy a Turbo gift set for men comprising shampoo, shower gel and soap on a rope. Like all things that achieve meteoric rises, the fall of turbocharging was equally steep. Insurers started loading the premiums of turbocharged models as they became magnets for car thieves. The popularity of multivalve engines with variable valve control and other fancy systems seemed to consign the turbocharger to the dumpster of automotive history and there was a time during the late nineties when a turbocharger was almost shorthand for engineering crudity; a cheat for extra power because the manufacturer wasnt sophisticated enough to develop a smarter way. Throughout the good years and bad, Saab persisted with turbocharged cars. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value The Saab 9-5 2.3T is a car that marks the rehabilitation of the turbocharger. In replacing the unloved 3.0-litre V6 model, its Saab through and through. Its interesting to pinpoint quite when turbochargers became socially acceptable again. Cars like the Subaru Impreza and Nissan Skyline stuck with the system and gained cult appeal, but the rise in popularity of turbodiesel cars really tipped the balance. Suddenly the fastest selling engines in most manufacturers ranges were turbocharged, giving the idea of forced induction a whole new lease of life. Saab werent slow in developing turbo diesel models of their own, but the 220bhp engine plumbed beneath the bonnet of the 9-5 2. 3T is in philosophy at least the sort of heavy puncher from Saabs old school. Its certainly more of an extrovert than the rather smooth but unexceptional 3.0-litre V6 engine it replaces. Despite its big capacity, that powerplant managed an underwhelming 200bhp and was saddled with the sort of carbon dioxide emissions (263g/km) that would make the Inland Revenue rejoice. As well as offering improved performance and emissions, the 2.3T engine also offers superior fuel economy. You win every way up."The Saab 9-3 2.3T is a car that marks the rehabilitation of the turbocharger"Its important not to confuse the 230bhp 2.3T with the 185bhp 2.3t. In Saab parlance, a capital T means bigger performance and the 2. 3T certainly delivers that in spades. Itll accelerate to 60mph in 7.5 seconds, but this figure undersells the engines capabilities. The 9-5 is a big, powerful front-wheel drive car and excels in the sort of mid range overtaking manoeuvres that are more representative of real world cut and thrust motorway scenarios. The big torque figure means that accelerating down an on-ramp will see the 2.3T nip from 40 to 60mph in a mere 5.9 seconds. The bulk of the engines torque is available in a wide band between 2,000 and 4,000rpm which removes the need to constantly hunt through the gears to extract meaningful acceleration. The five-speed manual gearbox is fairly slick in its action although theres also a Sentronic paddle shift automatic option available. All 9-5 2.3T models are fitted as standard with traction control to prevent wheelspin and a stability control system to keep the car on the straight and narrow if you get a little enthusiastic or have to make an emergency swerving manoeuvre. Motorway journeys are this cars forte. Imagine trying to develop the blueprint for the ideal long distance car. You need refinement, as excess noise and hassle would soon prove wearing. Thatll mean a smooth, powerful petrol engine and a wind-cheating silhouette. Comfortable seats are a must as is a quality audio system. Enough interior room and luggage capacity to travel in style you couldnt do without. Youd also put a decent fuel range on the wish list along with the sort of overtaking presence that will have other road users scuttling out of your way without attracting the attention of the boys in blue. Well done. Youve just described the key components of the Saab 9-5 2. 3T. Its difficult to imagine anything better suited to the job. Imagine youre a bored traffic policeman. Rolling into the staff canteen with mug of coffee and doughnut in hand, "I nicked some chap in a Saab" isnt going to carry quite the same peer group credibility as if hed collared a BMW or Mercedes driver. Naturally, the flipside of this is that the 9-5 doesnt have quite the image of its premium German rivals, but if substance is more important than style, youll not find the 9-5 lacking. The 9-5 line-up has been much improved in recent times, notably with the introduction of a revised range of interior colours to give a crisper, sportier appearance. The 9-5s Saab Information Display (SID) has been revised and now offers better graphics and more functions. The chiming seat belt reminder is now so annoying youll never drive this car without being properly belted in! On a serious note, the seat belt reminder and a raft of subtle safety systems has meant that the 9-5 has been given a prestigious maximum five stars on the Euro NCAP crash test. The final tweak has been the addition of three metallic paint finishes Expresso Black, Nocturne Blue and Glacier Blue. The 9-5 2.3T offers three trim levels, Linear, Arc and Vector, priced from £22,251, offering an entry point into the line-up some £4,500 cheaper than its predecessor. The Arc is pitched at £24,700 and the Vector at £24,626. Estate versions are also available, tacking an additional £1,200 onto these prices. This engine slots into the range between the 185bhp 2.3T and the 250bhp 2. 3 Aero HOT variants. Saab have realised that the more expensive their cars, the tougher task they have in battling the German prestige marques and the 9-5 2.3T is a wise move. Quicker, more economical, cleaner and more affordable, this is a car thats bang up to date, turbocharger and all. Saab 9000 Class
Executive car The Saab 9-5 is an executive car produced by the Swedish automobile maker Saab. The first generation was introduced in 1997 as the replacement to the Saab 9000 for the 1998 model year. At the time, the car represented a great leap forward for Saab. In the United States, the 9-5 was introduced in the spring of 1998, for the 1999 model year.
At September 15, 2009, the second generation was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show and production began in June 2010.[1] It is the first Saab to be launched under Spyker Cars ownership, even though it was developed completely under GM's ownership. Contents 1 The model-number/name

(January 2010) Originally, Saab light-weight bombers and fighter aircraft only had a model number. The name of the car; 95, was arrived at in the late 80's. Until then, models were numbered 92, 93, 95, 96, 97, 99, 900, and 9000 in succession and housing at least one digit, 9. Approaching the new millennium, it was thought that big numbers were outdated for a reference to the future, considering the small numbers that were to succeed 2000. During what in Sweden is called a Fika-rast a group of CAD-engineers (all but one with a M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering) started a discussion. The series of numbers appeared exponential. It was proposed that raising the 9 to the power of five would exceed 9000. After some thought, the group agreed, and Stig Nodin delivered the proposal to management. Nine to the power of five are two small digits that represent the number 59049. That number houses the digit 9 twice and is less than the number of the very first Saab prototype car at 92001. Also, recently it has been found that 5 is a natural number for Saab: In post-war Sweden, 11 June 1947, Saab announced that they were going to start manufacturing a civil automobile. This car had to meet five requirements: 1. A robust and reliable two-stroke engine. 2. Low weight for fast acceleration. 3. Aerodynamic shape. 4. Long distance comfort. 5. Safety for occupants.
Those were the requirements, but it was also noted that preferably it should be a low cost car to allow for a high production volume. This last addendum, was never met. For the current 9-5, only the last three requirements are met.
Badged as a 95, Saab consistently advertises it as the 9-5. The name is pronounced "nine five" rather than "ninety five". This model should not be confused with the Saab 95, produced from 1959 to 1978.
The first generation 9-5 was available with sedan and station wagon body styles. Aerodynamically, the sedan's drag coefficient is 0.29, and the station wagon's is 0.31 (U.S. version 0.33), which was introduced in 1999. It features such innovations as tracks to secure cargo down and a sliding load floor to make loading easier.
The last 9-5 Sedan of the previous generation rolled off the Trollhättan production line at the beginning of July 2009,[2] the last Wagon was assembled on February 1, 2010.[3] Since the summer of 1997, when the 9-5 production began, 252.236 saloons, and 231.357 wagons were built. The total production 483.593 units, was narrowely beaten by its predecessor, the 9000, of which 503.000 were built.

Saturn L-Series [edit] Engines
The first-generation 9-5 was powered by Saab's B205 and B235 straight-4 engines, and in Europe by Alfa Romeo's 1.9 JTD 16V diesel straight-4. A turbocharged version of the GM 54° , designated by Saab as B308, had a unique asymmetrical low-pressure turbocharger and was available from 1999 to 2003. This engine was available only with an automatic transmission, and cars with this engine installed are distinguishable by their twin tailpipes. The V6 was only available on Arc, SE, and Griffin models. In 2004, the V6 engine was replaced by a high pressure turbo straight-4 engine producing 220 hp (160 kW). By 2006 this engine was producing 260 hp (190 kW) even in the non-Aero or non-sport models (US models).
The B235-based 9-5 models have suffered an abnormally high rate of engine failures due to engine oil sludge. This primarily affected the 1999–2003 models. Saab refined the engine's positive crankcase ventilation system (PCV) for the 2004 and later model years and required use of fully synthetic oil, virtually eliminating the problem. Additionally, SAAB created update kits to retrofit to the 1999–2003 cars since they cannot be easily modified to accept the 2004 and later system. Mounting complaints by 9-5 owners forced GM to offer an 8 year warranty on the engine in 4 cylinder models for original owners, provided the owner can produce proof that they followed the manufacturer's oil change intervals. Saab now also recommends the use of recommended blended oil as a preventative measure.
[edit] Transmissions
The 9-5 was available with an Aisin AW 4-speed automatic transmission from 1997–2001. A new Aisin AW unit replaced the dated four-speed automatic with a five-speed automatic. A five-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard to the base models and the Aero.
[edit] Alternative propulsion
[edit] E85
In 2005, an updated version of the 2.0 L turbocharged I4 was introduced in the European market together with the 2006 9-5. The engine is sold as 2.0T BioPower, and it is optimized to run on E85 producing 132 kW (180 hp) at 5500 rpm. There is also a 2.3T BioPower version sold from 2007. It was also introduced in Australia.
[edit] E100
There is a Saab 9-5 E100 Concept, based on the turbo 2.0.
[edit] BioPower Hybrid
The Saab BioPower Hybrid concept/prototype is based on the Saab 9-5 E100, with three additional electric motors.
[edit] Safety
The 9-5 continued Saab's long-running tradition of offering class leading safety features and pioneered the availability of ventilated seats with Saab Active Head Restraints (SAHR), that moved up and forward to prevent whiplash when the car is struck from the rear. This feature won technology and safety awards, in Australia, Denmark and the United Kingdom. The Saab 9-5 also has been one of the first cars to have extensive side-crash protection. In the front seats are torso and head airbags on even the oldest of 9-5s, making it unique in that few other late 1990s vehicles provide the same feature. Even more important is the side structure, which includes a passenger cage and crumple zones. The design has been proven by the IIHS to protect occupants in side crashes, even without the addition of side airbags to the rear seats.
Another Saab feature is the "Night Panel", which permits dousing of the instrument panel lighting, except for essential information, for less distraction when night driving.
In the United States, OnStar is standard.[6]
[edit] Aero
The performance-oriented 9-5 Aero was first released in 2000 with a 230 hp 2.3T B235R engine. This flagship model had a long list of standard features[citation needed], a sport tuned suspension, and body side moldings. In 2002 a 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp) 2.3 turbo engine was made standard. The high-powered version of the 9-5 in the current form produces 260 PS (191 kW; 256 hp) and 350 N·m (260 lb·ft) of torque (370 N·m (270 lb·ft) with its 20-second overboost function accessible on the manual transmission equipped version). Hirsch Performance, MapTun Performance, and Nordic Uhr and BSR AB, all tuners specializing in Saab models, can increase this to a maximum of approximately 470 hp (350 kW) ECE (220 kW).[7][8]
Currently, the 260 PS (191 kW; 256 hp) B235R is the standard engine in the 9-5 in both the 2.3T and Aero trims. In addition, almost all standard features on the Aero are now standard on the 2.3T, the exceptions being sport-tuned chassis, two-tone leather upholstery, "anniversary" wheels and brushed aluminum interior trim, all of which are standard on Aero and not available on the 2.3T.
Additionally, in the past companies like MapTun Performance have developed aftermarket BioPower conversion kits for the 9-5 Aero and other Saab models. Larger injectors and remapped software in the Engine Control Unit (ECU) allow impressive[says who?] power levels from 285 hp (213 kW), 330 lb·ft (450 N·m) in the Aero model on E85 ethanol. Due to the efforts at ECUPROJECT.com, tuning can be accomplished by the car's owner now through the open source program called T7Suite which allows the ability for nearly infinite power and torque possibilities.[citation needed] This is a major advantage over the mail box-style tunes that were/are currently available from the limited SAAB tuning community.[citation needed]
[edit] Police car The 9-5 is used for patrol and undercover in several parts of its native country, Sweden, alongside the Volvo V70. Several police forces in the UK also use the 9-5 in their fleets, mostly in Aero guise.
The city of Aspen, Colorado, used Saabs as patrol cars from early 1970s until 2005, when the 9-5 was discontinued in favor of Volvo XC90.[9]
The town of Vail, Colorado, had been using Saabs since 1980, but in 2005, the black 9-5 patrol cars were replaced by Ford Explorers, due to budget reasons.[10]
In 2006 Lothian and Borders Police in Edinburgh, Scotland, started using three Saab 9-5 Aero 2.3T patrol cars as part of a fleet of 580 various vehicles. These 9-5s were customised to police specifications by the Saab, Vauxhall and Chevrolet Special Vehicles Operation (SVO) in Papworth, Cambridgeshire.[11]
In Poland, unmarked 9-5 is used as a video-pursuit vehicle, in Plock (Płock) area [12] [edit] Engines Model

A next generation 9-5 built on the Global Epsilon platform was presented at the Frankfurt International Auto Show in September 2009. The vehicle had its North American debut in October 2009 at the South Florida Auto Show in Miami.[16] On November 24, 2009, the first pre-series Saab 9-5 of the new generation rolled off the Trollhättan production line. On the Saab International Site stated below, more pictures and information on the car can be found.
With the announcement of the sale of Saab to Spyker on January 26, 2010, it was confirmed that the new generation Saab 9-5 was already taken into production at the Saab plant in Trollhättan. Full production began in April 2010, with the cars appearing in dealerships on June 19. [17]

Auto Express Car Reviews By Paul BaileySeptember 2003 The Swedes might not shout about it, but the Saab 9-5 has been a real success for the past two years. New diesels and a neat Tourer have helped boost sales of the BMW 5-Series rival to unprecedented levels. And this year, the model looks like it will score its highest number of annual registrations since its launch.
That's not bad for a car that's been with us since 1998. But even though it continues to do well, the 9-5 has been given a spruce-up ready for its assault on the final-quarter sales charts. New 2004-model cars will be on sale from October, and although visual changes are limited to a different grille, modified bumpers and lower side skirts, there's much more to the latest generation than meets the eye.
Aero variants get a power boost, but by far the most interesting version in the revised line-up is the 2.3T Vector. It replaces the outgoing 3.0-litre V6 model, which had 200bhp and excellent refinement, but was thirsty and belched out 263g/km of CO2, putting it in the highest company car tax bracket. The new 2.3 four-cylinder is much cleaner. Producing 212g/km of CO2, it's nine percentage brackets lower than the 3.0 for fleet users, yet offers greater power and performance. With 220bhp, it is a development of the Aero HOT's 250bhp unit. But instead of that model's high-output turbo, the 2.3T's low-pressure boost gives smooth delivery rather than out-and-out muscle.
Yet that doesn't mean the new car is slow. The 7.5-second 0-60mph time is one second quicker than the V6's, while the 146mph top speed is identical. The only difference is in the mid-range. Whereas the V6 had a wide torque spread and linear power delivery, the new engine feels more urgent. Throttle response is sharp and the turbo quick to react, but progress is never jerky. At cruising speeds, the motor is quiet, but lacks the V6's smoothness. Our sole complaint is that there's a fair amount of torque steer under hard acceleration, while the optional 17-inch alloys make the ride rather bumpy.
The cabin has been slightly modified, with the dash being changed from mid-grey to a more subtle, less plasticky black, while light grey leather trim is standard. The dashboard also features a new eye-level display identical to that in the 9-3, which shows warning lights and sat-nav information.
Overall, then, the 2.3T is a convincing package in the mid-size executive market and makes a lot more financial sense than its predecessor, although it lacks the V6's motorway refinement. Deleting the V6 petrol engine might seem a strange move, but the new 2.3T unit will particularly impress company car drivers. The four-cylinder is smooth enough and offers excellent performance at a far more affordable taxation level. It will still appeal to those who want an alternative choice, but despite the changes the 9-5 looks dated against rivals such as BMW's new 5-Series. (1998) 164,500 miles 1,295 1998 (S) Saab 9-5 2.3t Auto saloon, finished in Red with contrasting Charcoal Grey leather upholstery. (PLEASE NOTE: This is a genuinely outstanding and rather special 9-5 with a number of professionally fitted upgrades, so please read the whole listing before getting in touch - thanks).Mileage - 164k. The car is currently in daily use, however I'm doing around 10 miles per day, so the mileage isn't increasing dramatically. On the subject of mileage, Saab engines are highly durable and will easily exceed 300k miles if properly maintained. At only 164k, this one (genuinely) drives as reliably, smoothly and quietly as the 62k -mile 9-5 2.3t SE I owned last year.Tax - End April 2011.MOT - Mid Feb 2011. No advisory notes on current MOT.HPI Check - 14th Nov 2010 - all clear.Firstly, the car has a full Saab service history, with no less than 14 stamps in the original service book. More recently (the past four or five years) it has been maintained by Nottingham Saab, a highly reputable performance Saab specialist, who also carried out the modifications listed below. This is a 2.3t SE which was fitted with a Nordic Stage II ECU and Ferrita full cat-back stainless steel exhaust system approximately five years / 35k miles ago. This essentially gives the car similar power and performance to the 9-5 Aero, although I understand that this conversion offers more torque. Suffice to say that on the road it's very impressive indeed, while maintaining the standard car's drivability, reliablity and decent fuel consumption. At roughly the same time as the upgrades, the car benefitted from a new turbo, uprated (Aero spec) suspension and a replacement switchable automatic gearbox, so it's hopefully becoming clear that no expense has been spared in terms of keeping this car fit and healthy. The car was last serviced at 160,122 miles (Dec2009) at which point the aircon was also re-gassed. This week, the O/S/R Lower Control Arm and rose mount were replaced, along with the numerous rubber exhaust mounts, at a total cost of £320.CONDITION:As you can hopefully see from the pictures, this 9-5 is in absolutely immaculate condition. The bodywork and wheels of the car are in simply staggering condition, especially considering the age and mileage of the car, which hopefully demonstrates that it's few owners have all been genuine enthusiasts. The odd stonechip is in evidence, however they're tricky to see and overall this is one of the finest looking 12 year-old 9-5s you're ever likely to see.Inside is very much the same. The leather, carpets, plastics and roof lining are all in excellent condition. All the electronic functions are working as they should (windows, mirrors, audio, computer, heated seats, climate control etc) and all the readout pixels appear to be intact. The car starts reliably on the turn of the key and the engne settles to a smooth idle. The gearbox changes through it's ratios smoothly and there is no evidence of clunking or hesitation. The engine pulls throughout the rev range smoothly, with copious amounts of power and torque and no indications of any issues. The main controls are all responsive and feel fresh and tight, while the suspension soaks up bumps and undulations without any of the rattling or crashing you might associate with an older car.In short, the car looks fantastic and drives exceptionally well. There are no oil or water leaks, it doesn't overheat and there's no smoking under acceleration. Supplied with the car are two sets of working keys / remotes, plus the original Saab handbook wallet, containing handbooks and the original service book. I also have the full V5 document, the current (and previous) MOT(s) and the spare wheel, jack, tools and locking wheelnut keys are also present. This is a spectacularly nice example of this highly rated car, and thanks to it's increased specification, it offers Aero-bettering performance for significantly less outlay. Having owned 17 Saabs, of which 5 have been pre-2001 9-5s, I can honestly say that I've yet to see one in anything close to this condition, so I can assure any interested parties that taking the trip to see this example will not result in any disappointment! Please feel free to call me on 07545 311996 for more information.
