Auto Express Car Reviews By Ross PinnockOctober 2004 Sporty diesels are proving to be very popular additions to manufacturers' ranges these days, so when Saab announced the arrival of its latest 9-3 TiD in the UK, Auto Express was first in the queue to have a go behind the wheel. The executive saloon's new 1.9-litre engine may be smaller than the outgoing 2.2-litre motor, but power has increased by 25bhp to 150bhp. A less potent 120bhp variant is also on offer, although for our first drive on British roads, we opted for the range-topping Vector Sport. This latest Saab diesel is the General Motors unit that's been developed with Fiat, and it features the latest common-rail technology. Coupled to a close-ratio six-speed manual box, it gives the car a brisk turn of pace - but a 0-60mph time of 9.5 seconds gives little indication of the performance on offer. The 16-valve oil-burner is smooth and free revving, so enthusiastic driving means the stubby gearlever gets plenty of use. Thanks to the snappy change, that's no hardship, though. At low speeds, the 315Nm of torque available can easily have the stability assist light on the dash flickering, particularly in the wet road conditions we encountered. But it's at higher speeds where the 9-3 makes most sense. Motorway cruising is effortless, and there's always plenty in reserve. Almost too much in fact, as the refined engine and quiet cabin combine to mask the sensation of speed and make the TiD deceptively fast. Given the sporty nature of the new model, it's no surprise the ride is firm. However, it remains compliant, and is a good overall compromise. Agile handling is the result, so it's a shame the steering, which is accurate and direct, provides so little feedback. Along with the uninspiring exhaust note - which leaves you in no doubt as to which pump to use when it's time to fill up - this is the only real letdown. The introduction of the new Euro IV emissions-compliant diesel coincides with the axing of Arc trim in favour of a new Sport spec. Our Vector Sport 9-3 came with 17-inch alloy wheels, electronic stability control, reverse-parking sensors and an updated information and entertainment system as standard. However, this model is pricey, and we would favour the lower-specification Linear Sport - which retains the Vector's dual-zone air-conditioning, front foglights, leather upholstery and cruise control, but is ΂£1,500 cheaper. The 9-3 TiD's discreet styling and deceptive pace will win buyers' hearts, while the engine's economy and low emissions will win their minds. Sport trim is pricey, but it comes well equipped. There's something tactile and immediate about the driver feedback from this Swedish reworking of Vauxhall's Vectra floorpan that makes it come alive on a demanding road. It's good, but is it a true Saab? Too much General Motoring tinkering has tainted the traditional image of Trollhättan's products. They're watered-down versions of the unique Saab style and some consider them little more than rebadged clones of Vauxhall and Opel cousins. But that's unfair. After two weeks with a 1.9-litre 9-3 TiD turbodiesel in Vector trim I'm back on side. Look at it this way - General Motors pays the bills and makes some unpalatable business decisions; but Saab engineers design and build the 9-3, and it shows. Saab offers two turbodiesels in the 9-3 - a rather arthritic 2.2-litre version of an aging General Motors design which can be greedy and noisy and only manages 125bhp. The other is a joint Fiat/General Motors 1.9-litre product which is modern, clean, brisk and available in two stages of tune - an eight-valve 120bhp version and the 150bhp 16-valver I had on test. It's brilliant. Bolted into the sporting Vector specification it delivers a tax-efficient and fun-packed four-door with great handling, excellent seating, good economy along with some brash trim and a ride that reminds you the emphasis is on sports driving. The convertible (cabriolet) version was manufactured in Austria by Magna Steyr until 2010, when it was moved to Trollhättan. The 9-3 shares its platform with the Opel Vectra, and with the Cadillac BLS, which was made on the same assembly line up until 2009 in Sweden. The 9-3 is currently Saab's entry-level model; between 2005 and 2006 in North America, the Subaru Impreza-based Saab 9-2X was its entry-level model. Saab consistently advertises it as 9-3, pronounced as "nine three". The Saab 9-3 was launched in 1998 for the 1999 model year essentially as a rebadged 2nd Generation Saab 900 (1994-1998 model), and succeeded by a redesigned 9-3 for the 2003 model year. It is not to be confused with the Saab 93, pronounced "ninety three", which was a car produced by Saab from 1955 to 1960. Saab claimed that 1,100 changes were made, including a revised suspension in an attempt to tighten up the handling characteristics of its predecessor, the Saab 900 (1994-1998 model).[2] It featured slightly sleeker styling with some models sporting a black rear spoiler and removed Saab's trademark centrally-mounted "snow flap". It was available as a three or five-door hatchback, and as a two-door convertible. It was the last small Saab to use the company's H engine. Notable improvements over the Saab 900 were improved ride and handling and substantially improved crash-worthiness with standard side impact airbags with head protection and active headrests. The Saab 9-3 along with the Saab 9-5 and the Volvo S70 were the first cars in the world to earn the maximum score in a side impact augmented by a pole test[citation needed] based on Euro NCAP testing. The 9-3 continued the Saab safety tradition of performing an Elk Test. The 9-3 was available with a new variant of the B204 engine (B204E, 154 hp (115 kW)), a low pressure turbo (LPT) engine based on the B204L used in the last generation Saab 900. For the U.S. market, all 9-3s were turbocharged petrol engines with the "full pressure turbo" (B204L, 185 hp (138 kW)) as the standard offering, and a "HOT" (B204R, 200hp) variant in the SE models for the 1999 model year. The 2000 model year saw a revision from SAAB's Trionic 5 to Trionic 7 engine management system. The first generation 9-3 was also the first Saab available with a diesel engine, an Opel sourced engine shared with the Opel Vectra. A Saab innovation is the 'Night Panel', carried over from the Saab 900, which permits dousing of the instrument panel lighting, except for essential information, for less distraction when night driving. A total of 326,370 first generation 9-3s were built. U.S. Market M.S.R.P. It was named after the Saab 37 Viggen aircraft. It is no longer in production due to the 9-3 hatchback body style ending after 2002. It came with a turbocharged 2.3 L engine, (B235R) giving 225 bhp (168 kW; 228 PS) later 230 bhp (172 kW; 233 PS). Acceleration from 0–62 mph could be reached in 6.4 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (249 km/h).[citation needed] To handle the high power and performance the following elements were changed/modified: Heavy duty clutch and pressure plate, Stiffened and lowered springs, Firmer dampers, Stronger CV joints and driveshafts. To enable the front tyres to cope with the amount of torque available, the maximum torque was electronically limited. 1st gear was limited to 184 lb·ft (249 N·m) 2nd gear was limited to 243 lb·ft (329 N·m) 3rd gear and on had the full 258 lb·ft (350 N·m). Fewer than 3000 Viggens manufactured, of which only 500 units were produced for the UK market. The 2001 model year introduced a Traction Control System (TCS) to the Viggen. In addition to extra power and torque, it also featured a special rear wing (increasing the downforce by 50%) requiring relocation of the radio antenna, aerodynamically designed bumpers and side skirts reducing the drag coefficient by 8%, specially bolstered and colored leather seats (available in four colors: black with black inserts (charcoal), black with blue inserts (deep blue), black with orange inserts (flame ochre), and tan with tan inserts, sportier suspension, bigger wheels, upgraded brakes, and other upgraded parts. The Viggen was only available with a five speed manual transmission, CD player, power moonroof, and (what were initially) Viggen-specific motorized and heated leather seats with the Viggen delta logo embossed in the backrest; these were later also available in the Aero model without the embossed Viggen logo. Some colors featured carbon-fibre interior trim from its introduction to the middle of the 2001 model year, when Saab substituted a less expensive printed gray pattern for the dash and standard trim for everything else. New Viggen buyers in the USA were treated to two days of advanced driving instruction at Road Atlanta and dined with Saab USA executives from nearby Norcross, Georgia. This program, operated by Saab and Panoz, was called Viggen Flight Academy and later transformed into the current SAAB Aero Academy. Some motoring journalists were critical of untamed torque steer in low gears.[5] Although the torque steer can be nearly eliminated through the use of a steering rack brace, also called a "Viggen Rescue Kit" available through a few vendors. (December 2010) The second-generation model was launched at the North American International Auto Show in early 2002 for the 2003 model year. The new 9-3, like all Saabs, remained a front-wheel drive car. The most drastic change from the former generation was the elimination of the hatchback design. The second-generation 9-3 is available as a four-door sedan, a wagon (introduced late in 2005, known as the SportCombi, SportWagon or Sport-Hatch depending on the markets), and a two-door convertible. It includes a number of safety features, including innovations such as Saab Active Head Restraints (SAHR II) to reduce whiplash and ReAxs, a passive rear wheel steering design and passive toe-in to help reduce understeer under heavy braking. The new 9-3 departed from the EcoPower engine used previously for a new 2.0 L straight-4 engine derived from General Motors' Ecotec family for the petrol powered models. There are three different versions of the turbocharged I4, with the amount of turbo boost determining the power output. The 150 hp (110 kW) version (though two litre, it is called 1.8t) was standard in the non-U.S. market Linear form (trim-level). The 175 horsepower (130 kW) version (2.0t) was standard in U.S. market Linear or non-U.S. market Vector form, mated with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed 'Sentronic' which is a traditional automatic, not to be confused with SAAB's earlier 'Sensonic' which was a manual transmission which allowed for shifting without a clutch pedal. The 210 horsepower 2.0T was available in both the Arc and Vector forms, and the automatic transmission was available, though in the Vector, paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel were added. In 2003 Arcs and Vectors, the manual transmission was a 6-speed. The 9-3 and the Opel Vectra were the first of the global GM Epsilon platform, which was then lengthened to accommodate four new cousins, the Chevrolet Malibu/Malibu Maxx, the Pontiac G6, and the Saturn Aura. A proprietary fiber-optic electric/electronic system, the possibility of AWD (exploited from 2008 on, dubbed Saab XWD), and ReAxs as described above, are just a few of the features exclusive to the 9-3. [edit] 2004 2005-2007 Saab 9-3 convertible (US) Supposedly due to a request from Vector Aeromotive, the Vector form was replaced with the Aero in the United States. In addition, the Arc received the 5-speed manual in place of the 6-speed. 9-3 SportCombi [edit] 2005 United States versions were sold with 16" wheels standard (17" for the Aero) unlike the 15" wheels which were previously found in the Linear version. In the United States, but not in most countries, the 2005 was the last year of the Linear and Arc versions. [edit] 2006 A special "20 Years Edition Aero Convertible" for the American market was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2006 to celebrate 20 years since the introduction of the Saab 900 convertible. For 2006, the two optional engines were a 2.0 liter turbo 4 cylinder and a new 2.8 liter turbo 6 cylinder. The 4 cylinder option had 12.3 psi maximum turbo boost pressure and turned out 210 hp (160 kW), while the 6 cylinder had 8.7 psi boost and turned out 250 hp (190 kW). The 2.0 liter 16 valve turbo 4 cylinder model was marketed in the United States as the 2.0T, replacing the Linear and Arc models sold until the 2005 model year. The United States 2.0T version was similar to the 2005 Arc except for U.S. Linear wheels were used. The Linear and Arc versions continued to be sold in most other countries. In the middle of the 2006 model year, at least for cars made for the United States market, the trunk release button on the driver's door was eliminated, possibly to save costs. Cars made in the first half of 2006 have the trunk release mechanism mounted on the driver's door. After it was eliminated, the only way to open the trunk is to use the key fob (and the emergency release located inside the trunk for use by people who climb into the trunk ). [edit] 2007 The dashboard was completely revamped for 2007, with the Saab Information Display moved from its high mounted position to the main instrument binnacle, and a return to the look of the classic Saab 900 dash. The button-heavy climate control system disappeared, replaced by the Saab 9-5 climate control system, OnStar was re-introduced and required when Nav was ordered in North America, and the corporate GM head unit debuted, which allowed for satellite radio and MP3 CD capability. While the 2008 model is touted as all-new, the majority of under skin enhancements occurred for the 2007 model year. The suspension went from borderline harsh to firm, and the cabin was quieted considerably. Steel Gray was also replaced with Titan Gray as an exterior color choice. In the U.S. market, only the 210 hp 2.0 litre 16 valve turbo engine and the 250 hp 2.8 litre V-6 turbo were available. The manual transmission in the 2.0 model was changed from a 5-speed to a 6-speed. [edit] 2008 facelift 2008- Saab 9-3 sedan (US) Saab claims over 2000 changes were made to model year 2008 cars. The 2008 range, first presented at the Saab Festival in Trollhättan, Sweden (June 10, 2007) included new frontal styling inspired by the Saab Aero-X, new door panels, a new clamshell hood, and frosted rear lamps. Slight exterior modifications are available on the limited-edition XWD 280 horsepower (210 kW) 9-3 Turbo X, presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show (9/07).[8] The Turbo X made its North American debut at the New England Auto show in late November.[9] Saab also released an all-wheel drive version of the Aero, with the system dubbed "XWD", in March 2008. [edit] 2009 2009- Saab 9-3X The 2009 9-3 series expands the trim levels while dropping the limited-edition Turbo X[10] sedan and wagon from the lineup. The 2.0T and Aero sedan and wagon models are now available with Saab's all-wheel drive(XWD). The convertible range continues to lack the all-wheel-drive option because of limited under-body space for the necessary componentry due to added structural bracing to compensate for the rigidity lost when eliminating the hard roof from the design of a car. The new Saab 9-3 is virtually unchanged from the 2008 model, which underwent subtle design and performance enhancements.[11] During 2009 the 9-3X was launched at the Geneva auto show. The 9-3X is a four wheel drive XUV version of the 9-3 SportCombi.[12] [edit] 2011 facelift The 9-3 will receive a facelift for the 2011 model year before the new 93 arrives in late 2012. The facelift will include minor work to the exterior and interior. The major changes will be in the engine range with a overall reduction in diesel and petrol engine fuel consumption of 12% and 7% respectively.[13] [edit] Engines [14][15][16][17][18] Note: diesel engines are not available in North America. Starting from late 2004 diesel engines are Fiat sourced common rail units. Model Years Engine and type Displ. It was made to celebrate SAAB's 30 years of turbocharging. All Turbo X were offered in metallic jet black with matte grey trim. The Turbo X is SAAB's first production car with the XWD all-wheel drive system from Haldex Traction and eLSD. It is powered by a 2.8 litre V6 producing 280 PS (210 kW) mated to a six speed manual or automatic gearbox. It also has larger brakes as well as stiffer springs and shocks. The dash, shift lever and door panels have carbon fiber look and the turbo boost gauge draws its inspiration from the Saab 900.[8] [edit] Awards and achievements 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Top Safety Pick, (USA), Insurance Institute for Highway Safety 2006 Wards 10 Best Engines 2.8L V-6 Turbo Top Safety Pick - Gold Award, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, USA. 2004 Best Pick in side-impact crash tests, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Ciao, your my best friend... (sorry, about that, I won't do it any more!)At the age of 15, I am a couple of years off going out with my (little) cash and trying to buy a car. So I've just got to put up with helping my Dad with his choice of new car, so here is the first of possibly 3 new car ops. Once again, don't be deterred by my age, because this op is all mine apart from the driving pint of view.A couple of weeks ago, we got the list for our next company car. With the new tax laws (as I'll explain later), we have been forced to get a diesel model. And my Dad detestes diesels to the point of murder! So it is highly important that he gets a good one. The list was interesting, since there were very few diesels. That limited us to about 5 cars but 2, the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Vectra were struck off quickly. That left us just 3 cars. When cars are launched they will be subject to a Carbon Dioxide emissions rating, which then gives them a percentage that puts them in a group. This is a fixed tax rate that company car drivers pay. But the less economical the car is, the higher the group, the higher the tax (hence the diesel). But the big problem, which has outraged drivers is that the more driving you do, the more you pay. This is a nightmare for us as my Dad does around 60,000 miles a year. The government wants us to do less than 14,000 miles. See the problem yet?The government insist it's to get us out and use public transport or walk. Okay then, we'll walk down the M25, to London from Suffolk, or go by train and get their 3 days later. How can we use a public transport system which is as reliable as Britain winning the World Cup. But I'll calm down and get on with the op...THE BACKGROUND OF SAABThink of Swedish car manufacturers and of course Volvo will spring to mind, but for around 40 years, Saab have been pulling the Swedish economy along as well. Saab burst onto the motoring - and the motorsport - scene in the 60's. Their 62000 dominated rallying in the mid-60's and things went from there. No longer a sporting manufacturer, Saab ahve grown from strength with a very small range. The distinctive 900 was soon launched as was the 9000 saloon. In the 90's, Saab launched the much improved 9-5, which was built in conjunction with new parents GM (General motors, which includes several US manufacturers plus Vauxhall, Saab and soon Daewoo) and then came the 9-3, which I will describe now...EXTERIORDespite being the oldest in it's class - at 5 years old - line the 9-3 up against it's BMW, Audi and Lexus rivals and it's lack of a saloon makes the Swedish car stand out. The coupe roofline, belies it's huge interior (read on) and it also looks clean and neat, if now dating. A quick nip and tuck last year, meant new bumpers and revised steel wheels for this version. The tradmark Saab grille domintes the front end and then leads into a stubby rear end, which can get an optional spoiler.INTERIOR AND COMFORTSlide inside the 9-3 and people familiar with Saab's will recognise the rather quirky facia. The big plastic 'slab' is now rather dated, however distinctive it is. The air-craft style switches - thanks to Saab's aero experiance - are like nothing in the class and each are very good quality and passes the 'Solex knock-knock test'. Comfort too is first rate. Stepping from the VW Passat we have at the moment and into the 9-3 and the differences are obvious. Whether it's the optional leather that was equipped or, not, I was nothing but comfortable. ON THE ROAD(After probing into my Dad, I have prepared this)I sat up in the front and in the behind and again, I was very comfortable and the soft suspension meant a brilliant ride too, which is brilliant over those bumps on the motorway. However, the soft set-up does take it's toll on the 9-3's handling. Although I wasn't driving, I could feel the 9-3 lean into the corners and tended to wobble when coming out of roundabouts. Ironically, my Dad just backs this up, thinking his stiffer VW Passat was more stable than the Saab. PERFORMANCE, ECONOMY AND REFINEMENTMy Dad can't stand diesels. He thinks they are noisy, dirty and unrefined disasters of technology, so he turned the ignition wearily. To his - and my - surprise, there was little grumble from under the bonnet and little noise was projected into the cabin. Even though it was cold and hadn't been started for a few hours, the engine was very refined. The 2.2 TiD unit was introduced last year, as part of a new range of 'revolutinary' new Saab diesels. Plenty of money has paid off and my Dad was extremely surprised by the 9-3's accomplishement on the go. In figures, the 9-3 returns a healthy 45.6mpg, which is highly respectable. In performance terms, the 125bhp 9-3 will breeze to 60mph in 10.1 seconds and carry onto 124mph. More importantly though, the TiD has a CO2 figure of 164co2. Which, i believe, is very good for a car of that size. Why not compare them...SAAB 9-3 2.2TiD 5DR125bhp124mph45.6mpg164Co2RENAULT LAGUNA II 1.9dCI PRIVILEGE SPORTS TOURER120bhp122mph50.4mpg149Co2VW PASSAT 1.9 TDI PD 100 SE100bhp114mph49.6mpg154Co2PRICES AND EQUIPMENTIt's hard to compare this 9-3. The other models we are considering are estates and so add on an extra 1000 or so. But compared to rivals such as the BMW 3-Series and the Mercades C-Class, the 9-3's German rivals look grossly overproced. At 17.320 for the 9-3 2.2TiD 5dr, the Saab isn't very cheap, but it does get a host of kit including...AIR CONDITIONINGDRIVERS AIRBAGPASSENGER AIRBAGSIDE AIRBAGSABS (Anti-lock Brake System)EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution)A SINGLE CD PLAYERELECTRIC WINDOWS (FRONT AND REAR)ELECTRIC MIRRORSALARMIMMOBILISERDEADLOCKSREMOTE CENTRAL LOCKINGTWO-WAY ADJUSTABLE STEERINGALLOY WHEELS (895)LEATHER UPHOLSTRY (750)ELECTRIC SUNROOF (830)SAFETY AND SECURITYAs you can read from the above, the Saab 9-3 gets a wealth of safety and security kit. But does it all work in practice. Well, judging from it's 4 out of 5 rating for the compulsary NCAP Crash tests, the 9-3 should protect very well in the unfortunate event of a crash. Another unique feature the Saab features is it's 'anti-whiplash head restraint'. Although Volvo snatched the idea, Saab spent plenty of money pioneering it and so should go down as creating it. In the event of a front or backward smash, the head restraint moves up and over the head, to protect the head and back and the seatbelts hold you in place. It's more complicated than it sounds, but we'll leave that to them. Don't want your car to go walkabouts with a stranger, well Saab have equipped a quirky but innovative ignition system. Located by the gearstick, when you take the key out, it locks and so cannot e moved without the key combination. But if the system is overun, the gearstick is locked into reverse and it can't be moved without dismantlling the whole engine. So if you see a Saab going backwards down the road, expect a thief to be in the driving seat.PRACTICALITYThis is the only car we looked at that wasn't an estate and to be honest, it doesn't matter. Open the boot and you'll be faced a dark abyss, the dealer called the boot. A huge opening and large load area gives a huge estate rivalling 493litres of boot space. Head and legroom in the front and rear were nothing short of excellent too.THE SERVICE Our local Saab dealer is 'Turners Saab' and me and my Dad came out of the dealership beaming thanks to the exceptional staff. We weren't pounched on like prey, but we're offered. They were very helpful in showing us the right car and when they hadn't got the exact car, they went off and really tried to find one. We were given in-depth information by the salesperson and he didn't try to sell the car off as perfect, saying it can be a little gruff and that it's not estate practicality. plus he also mentioned a new 9-3 coming out soon, whereas other dealers wouldn't even hint it. My Dad is chatty and the sales person was obliged to answer all questions and he was always kind and very helpful. Brilliant. I was also pleased with how the dealer spoke to me and congratulated me on my car knowledge and not ignore me like some dealers tend to do (maybe they can't face having less knowledge than a 15 year-old!)OWNINGOf course we don't know wha it's like to own a Saab, but we know several people who have them and they have had absolutley no problems whatsoever. And Saab's record in exemplary and that shouldn't change in time. Depreciation is also very good. Expect this model to loose around 41% of it's value in the first 3 years. Although less than the VW, it's more than the Renault.THE FUTURE FOR SAABThe future for Saab is very rosy. Their partnership with GM is starting to bear fruit, as a new 9-3 is set to be launched later in the year. The new saloon, replacing the hatchback, will be the first in a line of 9 new models in the next 5 years. The 9-3 though is to get a saloon, cabrio, coupe and for the first time an estate and a 4x4. Built on the Epsilon platform which car journalists are raving about on the forthcoming Vauxhall Vectra, the smaller chassis and stiffer suspension should ensure a much better drive. An MPV and large 4x4 is set to be lauched too, meaning a busy - but exciting - few years for Saab.EXTERIOR * * * INTERIOR * * * COMFORT * * * * QUALITY * * * * RIDE * * * *HANDLING * * PERFORMANCE * * * *ECONOMY * * * *REFINEMENT * * * *PRICE * * * * EQUIPMENT * * * * SAFETY * * * * SECURITY * * * *PRACTICALITY * * * * *DEALERSHIP * * * * *OTHER RIVALSBut what about other cars in the 14,000 - 18,000 price bracket? For the last 30 years all their cars have had the number 9 in them, we have had, that I can recall, the 95, 96, the 900, the 9000, and lately the 9-3 and 9-5. They must have the most unimaginative car naming department in the entire global motor industry. But what about the cars themselves. I have recently been driving a SAAB 9-3 turbodiesel. Saab are of course owned by GM these days and if you wanted a mid-range car there is the Vectra. I have had quite a history of cars, considering that i am still only 21 years of age. My first car was in fact a Ford Mondeo LX 1.8. I would like to point out that i did not like that car, it was sluggish, uncomfortable and just not for me. Following that i had a Saab 9-3 2.2TiD, which if you read from my other reviews, i loved! Following this i still have 2 BMWs and now my latest runabout, the Ford Mondeo ST24 2.5 V6. So where to start! I wanted a new car as a runabout, something that was fun, exiting to drive, but not to flash.
