Andy Enright ReportsDespite the best efforts of many of the leading car manufacturers, the diesel option is still associated with a certain deathly practicality. Admitting to buying a diesel will still often tar you with either a pipe and slippers image or the faint whiff of skinflint. Saab have decided that diesel neednt be dowdy and have given their 9-3 1.9TiD diesel line up the Airflow treatment. If theres a better looking compact executive diesel car on sale at the moment, Ive yet to see it. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Saab have been refreshingly honest about the reasons for the introduction of the Airflow model. The standard 9-3 1.9TiD features an innovative particulate filter to cut down on emissions and comply with Euro IV regulations. Unlike other particulate traps, it is maintenance-free and self-cleaning, requiring no additives or periodic replacement. In order to clean the filter and to keep the exhaust flow as free as possible, these deposits are periodically burnt off by short pulses of over-fuelling. These briefly raise exhaust temperatures to the required level of 600º C. The process is automatically initiated when back pressure in the exhaust system reaches a certain level and is completely undetectable by the driver. The self-cleaning process takes place whenever necessary, irrespective of throttle load or engine temperature. Unfortunately production bottlenecks have resulted in a shortage of these filters. As a sweetener aimed at private buyers for whom the three per cent reduction in benefit-in-kind taxation of a Euro IV-compliant diesel isnt applicable, Saab have quickly released the Airflow, a model without the filter. Theyve also worked at improving the value proposition to appeal to buyers who know that there are a great many talented alternatives around. Upgraded alloy wheels, an advanced Saab Infotainment System and a rear boot spoiler for the Vector models are all offered at no extra cost to the buyer as a way of apologising for the glitch in the supply chain. This equates to a value package of between £650 and £740, depending on the model you opt for. The only real downside is that you cant have an automatic."The Airflow is a neat solution to an unexpected problem"Saab have had difficulty coping with demand for the diesel versions of the 9-3 and the Airflow will go some way to solving that demand. Despite lacking the particulate filter, carbon dioxide emissions are exactly the same as the standard car, as is performance and fuel economy. That means excellent showings in all three cases, whichever of the two diesel units you choose, one a 120bhp 8-valve unit that will appeal to the more cost conscious, the other a gutsy 150bhp 16-valve engine for those with a heavier right foot. These 1. 9-litre units replaced the 2.2-litre TiD engine that the current generation 9-3 had from launch, Trollhattan's first ever diesel. Four years hard development work went into that engine and it was a decent effort but despite continual improvements, it was never capable of matching the class best in terms of emissions and fuel economy. The latest 1.9-litre TiD units address those concerns very effectively. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard with the option of a six-speed auto for the 150bhp version, theres plenty of scope for plugging the car straight into the meat of the torque curve. With at least 90% of peak torque available in a broad load running from 1,750 to 3,250rpm, youll be guaranteed respectable progress. After all, peak torque for the 16v engine is 315Nm and the 8v unit is only marginally weaker at 280Nm. Compared to the old 2. 2-litre TiD unit, the 150bhp 1.9-litre TiD generates 20 per cent more power, 12.5 per cent more torque and greater refinement with the added benefits of lower CO2 emissions and better fuel economy. Have cake. Eat it. Its as simple as that. Itll notch off the sprint to 60mph in just 9.3 seconds but the in-gear acceleration times that really indicate a diesel engines torque response have been slashed dramatically. The eight-valve version offers superior fuel economy, notching up an impressive 49.2mpg on the combined cycle. Whereas the original 9-3 made something of a speciality out of offering more performance per pound than anything from Germany could muster, the current Sport Saloon is a subtler instrument. The suspension and handling, for example, are better than any previous mid range Saab model. Just when you think the ride has been optimised for high-speed cruising, the cars suspension shows that it knows what to do when presented with a corner. It deploys its power noticeably better than Saabs of yore as well. Despite being fitted with traction control electronics as well as a standard stability control system, the 9-3 Sport Saloon is rarely forced to fall back on their safety net. When it comes to junior executive cars, Saab aim to outscore their German rivals in terms of value for money while producing a car that underlines many of their traditional values. To this end, the 9-3 Sport Saloon features a dash thats more upright than Dixon of Dock Green, an ignition lock next to the handbrake and a cupholder mechanism that can reduce design students to hushed reverence. A whole array of functions can even be preset to personal driver preference, including the anti-theft alarm, parking radar settings, rain-sensitive wiper control and the thresholds of the automatic climate control. Although the 9-3 Airflow TiD has come about as a result of a rather prosaic supply chain problem, it has resulted in a very attractive car, especially to private buyers. With prices starting at less than £20,000, theres little to touch it in terms of value. Small wonder the order books have looked so healthy.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Saab 9-3 Airflow 1.9TiD range PRICES: £19,995-£22,495 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 12 CO2 EMISSIONS: 154-159g/km PERFORMANCE: [150bhp] 0-60mph 9.2s / Max Speed 131mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: [150bhp] (average) 48mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Traction Control, Stability Control, Cornering Braking Control, Saab Active Head Restraints WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 4635/2038/1466mm Send by Messenger Email this article Print More news and reviews from Saab More motoring news Message Boards - Talk about it Latest Videos Latest Message Board Threads Got an opinion? " Factsheet No Information available Running Costs Image gallery IF something sounds too good to be true, it usually is, but in the case of the latest addition to Saab’s range, the reality really does live up to the promise. The Airflow range of cars, available in the 9-3 and 9-5 models, are tailored exclusively for fleet buyers and offer more car for less money. Based on the entry-level Linear trim, the Airflow models add colour-coded door handles and sill covers, deeper front and rear bumpers, a rear spoiler and 17-inch alloy wheels (up from 15s) to make them look more sporty. Inside, extra standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control and an MP3-compatible CD player. And, like all 2007 model year 9-3s, the Airflow versions benefit from an upgraded interior which looks and feels far better than the dated look of before. The simplified dashboard with its chrome trim surround looks and feels much classier, and also houses some welcome technological improvements. A Bluetooth-ready mobile telephone system replaces the previous integrated phone option, while the satellite navigation system is now a GPS-based unit which includes touch-screen technology and voice control. The stereo system also benefits from an upgrade, with a tailor-made Bose set-up now available. As well as more equipment, the Airflow models, available in saloon and SportWagon bodystyles, cost £975 less than the Linear versions and have better residual values (33% vs 31% for the 1.9 TiD 120 according to CAP), giving fleet managers lower wholelife costs and drivers lower benefit-in-kind tax bills thanks to the reduced P11d price. As well as being cheaper to buy and run than the Linear models, the 9-3 Airflow range has been positioned to offer savings against rival models from Audi and BMW. For a 40% taxpayer, the 9-3 Airflow 1.9 TiD 120 will cost £19 a month less in benefit-in-kind tax than an Audi A4 1.9 TDI SE and £32 less than a BMW 318d. Four engines are available, a 1.8-litre petrol with 122bhp and a turbo version with 150bhp, plus two 1.9-litre TiD diesels in 120 and 150bhp guises. Saab GB managing director Jonathan Nash said: ‘We expect fleet managers to find the Airflow models extremely attractive due to their front-end prices and fuel efficient engines, plus the promise of strong residual values which all add up to very competitive wholelife costs. ‘User-chooser drivers will also be delighted with the ultra-competitive benefit-in-kind tax bills which offer considerable savings against the major competition.’ The firm’s brand manager – fleet, Paul Adler, added: ‘Airflow allows fleets to select a full premium car but one that isn’t bog standard in terms of spec. ‘These models have real kerb appeal and will take between 15% and 30% of the fleet sales mix.’ Behind the wheel THE interior upgrade for all 2007 model year 9-3s is a big step forward and gives the Saab a much more premium look and feel. Gone are the ungainly air vents and the myriad buttons scattered around the dashboard, replaced by a new fascia design which houses all the stereo and satellite navigation controls in a chrome rimmed area. Below are three circular knobs for the climate systems. The engine line-up is familiar to any Vauxhall or Saab driver, and we tried the 1.9-litre turbodiesel with 120bhp – the likely best-seller in the Airflow range. Although a little noisy at start-up, the noise levels are fairly well suppressed on the move. With 206lb-ft of torque available from a low 2,000rpm, there’s ample power in the mid-range. As an all-round package it makes a strong case for itself, and doesn’t lose out by much performance-wise compared to the 150bhp version of the engine. It’s also more fuel efficient and will be cheaper on benefit-in-kind tax as it sits two bands lower than the TiD 150 in the company car tax system. The main mechanical change to the Airflow is the adoption of 17-inch alloy wheels, as opposed to 15-inch items on the Linear model on which it is based. While the ride is harder than in the Linear, it’s not uncomfortable and blends decent handling with long distance comfort. Verdict SELECTING an Airflow model over another 9-3 is almost a no-brainer – it’s cheaper than the Linear trim, looks better and will appeal to both drivers and fleet managers thanks to its lower running costs and benefit-in-kind tax bills. The interior upgrade is a welcome step, too. " Factsheet No Information available Running Costs Saab has suffered a rough ride of late, with plummeting sales as buyers steer clear of the marque until its future outside of GM is finalised. Over the years, a lack of investment has hampered the brand, so it seems rather ironic that Saab has chosen such an inglorious period in its history to launch some seriously impressive upgrades to its diesel engine line-up. Both the 1.9-litre diesels in either single turbo TiD or twin-turbo TTiD guises have benefitted from upgrades under the bonnet to bring better fuel economy and lower emissions without sacrificing performance. Introduced under the EcoPower banner, both engines are now around 7% more efficient thanks to some fine tuning – both employ wider gear ratios with a longer final drive for increased efficiency at cruising speed, the engine has been remapped to make it more efficient while idling, and low rolling resistance tyres are employed. This doesn’t sound much, but it has made a big difference. The 150bhp 1.9 TiD unit on test here now emits 137g/km of CO2 and returns claimed combined fuel economy of 54.3mpg. Before its EcoPower tweaks, the same engine emitted 157g/km and returned 47.9mpg. As a result, the EcoPower model falls from the 22% benefit-in-kind tax band to the 18% band – the second lowest available for diesels. This means a driver is £326 a year better off in company car tax terms. And the fuel economy benefits translate into a £920 saving over four years and 80,000 miles. For the TTiD version, which delivers 180bhp, the improvements are just as marked, with CO2 emissions of 139g/km and combined economy of 53.3mpg. Performance remains unchanged (bar a slightly longer 50-80mph time in fifth gear) so the 9-3 in 150bhp guise remains a strong performer, picking up speed from low down in the rev range and settling into a relaxed cruise. The only downside is the hard ride and general feeling that the chassis has reached its final stage in development – put simply, there’s only so much refinement that can be built into a car which is this long in the tooth. But at a whisker under £20,500 on-the-road, the 9-3 in Airflow guise is good value. Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control and MP3-compatible stereo, while outside are a host of additions to make it look more sporty – 17-inch alloy wheels, colour-coded door handles and deeper front and rear spoilers to give the 9-3 some extra road presence. While the 9-3 may be past its best in outright dynamic terms, the EcoPower engineering improvements bring it bang up to date and make it a serious contender for drivers wanting a cost-effective car with a badge which sits between the volume and premium brands.
