Saab Sport was introduced as a follow up to Saab GT750. The Saab Sport was a modified version of the Saab 96 The interior of a 1965 Saab Sport Saab Sport is an automobile from Saab, launched in 1962 as a replacement for the Saab GT750. It used the same body shell as the Saab 96, with slight modifications and with a different interior configuration and equipment. From the outside it could be differentiated from a standard 96 by the twin chrome stripes along the lower part of the sides. The engine was an 841 cc two-stroke three cylinder engine with one Solex carburetor per cylinder, giving 52 hp (39 kW). The engine was lubricated via a separate tank for two-stroke oil, allowing the use of ordinary petrol. The gearbox had four gears. In order to overcome the problems of overrun for the two-stroke engine, a freewheel device was fitted. The car also used disc brakes at the front, something that was unusual at the time and the wheels had four studs instead of the five used on the 96 and were of a stronger build, to withstand the extra workload. From 1963 on the model for the USA market was named Granturismo 850. In the 1965 model year power output was raised to 55 hp (41 kW). From model year 1966 all market variants were named Monte Carlo 850. During model year 1967 the two stroke models were phased out and replaced with the Monte Carlo V4 (with the 65 hp (48 kW) Ford Taunus V4 engine). Production ended in 1968. In the 1962 Safari Rally, Pat Moss (Stirling Moss's sister and later Pat Moss-Carlsson) drove her personal light blue Saab Sport, since the competition department at SAAB didn't manage to get a suitable rally car on time. She was promised a new car if she should crash. The car was one of a kind. Since Pat Moss couldn't get the car in red (her favorite colour), she insisted on at least having a red interior. This resulted in the only light blue Saab Sport with red interior. In the Midnight Sun Rally 1964, Pat Moss drove a red Saab Sport. In fact, all of the new Saab diesel engines incorporate second generation, common-rail technology which makes for quieter, faster and cleaner driving. For a high-performance drive, opt for the 150 bhp version giving you a massive 320 Nm of torque. A more economical drive can be enjoyed with the 120 bhp engine. Secreted in the boot is a handle that frees your luggage compartment from storage constraints. Once divided, the luggage compartment can hold valuables far more securely than if they were placed loose in a conventional boot. Even the 1.8t versions are causing sleepless nights in Germany. By Andy EnrightThe formula for success in the compact executive sector is easy. Your car needs to be quick, well-built, comfortable, good looking, handle well and be vaguely affordable. It also needed a prestigious German badge on its bonnet. Just lately, however, weve seen a slight shift in the status quo and models like Saab's 9-3 Sport Saloon have what it takes to meet and beat the Germans at their own game. The 1.8t versions are positioned towards the affordable end of the 9-3 scale and are, therefore, hugely important for the Swedish company.It's no secret that car manufacturers generate column inches with range-topping 'halo' models but it's the more prosaic volume-selling models that have a more significant effect on the bottom line. Starting at a tempting £20,050, the 1.8t Saab 9-3 Sport Saloon's pricing effectively prices Mercedes Benz out of direct contention and makes the purchase of a basic Audi A4 or an entry-level BMW 3-Series appear something of a wilful extravagance. All the current Saab 9-3 models benefit from a facelift based on themes from the Aero X concept car. The clamshell bonnet visually widens the front of the car and all external rubbing strips have been removed to give a cleaner look. Theres a classier finish to the front grille and a set of LED light strips that sit across the top of the headlamp pod while the rear light clusters are shrouded in smoked glass. The previous generation 9-3 made something of a speciality out of offering more performance per pound than anything from Germany could muster and the Sport Saloon continues this theme, the 150bhp engine fitted to the 1.8t models good for a sprint to 60mph in 9.5s and on to a top speed of 131mph. What's most impressive is the fact that turbo lag - that annoying pause whilst you wait for the turbo to do its thing - is as good as absent in the Saab. The engine feels more like a decently sized V6 than a 1.8-litre four-cylinder unit. Torque is also prodigious, the Saab returning a figure of 177lb/ft. Small wonder the engine feels so muscular for one of such modest capacity. The combined fuel consumption figure of 34.4mpg is good going indeed considering the verve of the 1.8-litre unit. The ride and handling are better than any previous mid range Saab model. Just when you think the ride has been optimised for high-speed cruising, the Saab's suspension shows that it knows what to do when presented with a corner. It deploys its power noticeably better than Saabs of yore as well. Three trim levels are available with this engine. As well as the £20,050 Airflow version, there are the more familiar Linear SE and Vector Sport variants. The Linear SE model weighs in at £22,060 with the Vector Sport versions costing from £23,610. Even the base Airflow variant is classily appointed with a cruise control, a trip computer, dual-zone climate control, tinted windows and a punchy Saab audio system as standard. Linear SE adds rear parking sensors and the Saab comfort pack. Then you have the Vector Sport which supplements this with the sports chassis, stability control and a sports steering wheel. Buyers seeking extra practicality can also opt for the SportWagon estate model and theres also the sleek convertible to bear in mind. The cabin of the 9-3 remains resolutely Saab with all the controls angled towards the perpetually grinning pilot. The 9-3 Sports Saloon features a dash thats more upright than Dixon of Dock Green, the ignition next to the handbrake and a cupholder mechanism that can reduce design students to hushed reverence. Safety provision runs to active head restraints plus front, side and curtain airbags. Although you may find this hard to believe, if you add up the test scores and take into account the 9-3 1.8t's value proposition, there's no getting away from the fact that this is currently one of the best buys in the junior executive class. Many other options look either too dear, not good enough or both by comparason. For years the 9-3 was a nearly car, the sort of car that had its merits but which couldn't compete head on with the best of the rest. Those days are long gone. With just enough essential Saab DNA and enough of everything else to put a lick on established rivals, the 9-3 Sports Saloon 1.8t has the power to convert even the most hardened sceptic. The executive saloon's new 1.9-litre engine may be smaller than the outgoing 2.2-litre motor, but power has increased by 25bhp to 150bhp. A less potent 120bhp variant is also on offer, although for our first drive on British roads, we opted for the range-topping Vector Sport. This latest Saab diesel is the General Motors unit that's been developed with Fiat, and it features the latest common-rail technology. Coupled to a close-ratio six-speed manual box, it gives the car a brisk turn of pace - but a 0-60mph time of 9.5 seconds gives little indication of the performance on offer. The 16-valve oil-burner is smooth and free revving, so enthusiastic driving means the stubby gearlever gets plenty of use. Thanks to the snappy change, that's no hardship, though. At low speeds, the 315Nm of torque available can easily have the stability assist light on the dash flickering, particularly in the wet road conditions we encountered. But it's at higher speeds where the 9-3 makes most sense. Motorway cruising is effortless, and there's always plenty in reserve. Almost too much in fact, as the refined engine and quiet cabin combine to mask the sensation of speed and make the TiD deceptively fast. Given the sporty nature of the new model, it's no surprise the ride is firm. However, it remains compliant, and is a good overall compromise. Agile handling is the result, so it's a shame the steering, which is accurate and direct, provides so little feedback. Along with the uninspiring exhaust note - which leaves you in no doubt as to which pump to use when it's time to fill up - this is the only real letdown. The introduction of the new Euro IV emissions-compliant diesel coincides with the axing of Arc trim in favour of a new Sport spec. Our Vector Sport 9-3 came with 17-inch alloy wheels, electronic stability control, reverse-parking sensors and an updated information and entertainment system as standard. However, this model is pricey, and we would favour the lower-specification Linear Sport - which retains the Vector's dual-zone air-conditioning, front foglights, leather upholstery and cruise control, but is ΂£1,500 cheaper.
