The latest, most powerful Saab 9-3. The 9-3 1.9 TiD is good for up to 150bhp. But even this sort of power in a diesel-powered small exec saloon is quickly becoming the equivalent of turning up at a party with a cheap bottle of plonk, when everyone else has brought vintage Puligny Montrachet. BMW’s best-selling 320d offers 174bhp, and the new A4 2.0 TDi is going to be offering comparable grunt. Enter then, the new Saab 9-3 1.9 TTiD. On sale from early 2008 (the newly facelifted 9-3 has just hit the showrooms) it will be offering 180bhp and 295lb ft of torque. As the extra ‘T’ on the bootlid suggests it’s a near-identical engine to the current offering but the extra grunt comes courtesy of an additional, though smaller, turbocharger and internal strengthening. What's it like? One of our criticisms of the current Saab diesel is that it lacks the refinement of German rivals. Sadly it’s more of the same with the more powerful version – with just that last few percent of polish missing when you put your foot down. But you can’t fault the zestiness with which the new motor endows the baby Saab. It’s got impressive urge from near tickover, all the way through to the red line. and it feels remarkably free-revving for a diesel. Like the lesser versions the TTiD has the option of an auto 'box and with 180bhp it’s now a sensible choice. Our self-shifting test car had near imperceptible changes and well-judged ratios that always seemed to tap into the maximum torque. The rest of the Saab’s vices and virtues come bundled in of course. The mild restyle has been effective in sprucing up the looks and it’s still got one of the most comfortable cabins – regardless of price. Should I buy one? Only if you want to be a bit different. Most other cars hovering in the Saab’s price bracket are far superior to drive, so despite the new diesel it’s hard to commend it over a BMW or Audi. Auto Express Car Reviews Text: Angus Frazer / Photos: Matt Vosper June 2007 Rating: Saab is promising its new 9-3 family will have the X-factor when it goes on sale in the UK in September. With 178bhp and 400Nm of pulling power on offer, engine response is excellent... All three models in the line-up - the Cabriolet, Sport Saloon and SportWagon - have been given a major facelift, with styling inspired by the Aero X concept, which Auto Express drove in March last year. But despite major visual changes, which include fresh headlamp units and revised panels from the A-pillars forward, the 9-3 isn't an all-new car. Underneath it uses the same platform as before, which is shared with the current Vauxhall Vectra. We got behind the wheel of the flagship Aero SportWagon, powered by a new 1.9-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engine. Top-spec Aero models are distinguishable from the rest of the range by sportier grilles and sharper bumpers front and rear. The look perfectly complements the new headlamps, which feature a smart, additional lighting strip above the main light unit. The firm has also removed all the door and bumper rubbing strips to give the 9-3 a cleaner overall shape. And there's no doubt it looks handsome in estate form. Saab's new TTiD engine has been designed to provide instant throttle response throughout the rev range. Two turbochargers, one small, one large, are used. When the driver presses the throttle, the smaller turbo is able to react faster than the bigger unit, so from idle to 1,500rpm, it is used. From there, the second turbocharger is brought into play, while from 3,000rpm on, the larger one works on its own. In practice, it performs well. With 178bhp and 400Nm of pulling power on offer, engine response is excellent, and the car is capable of sprinting from 0-60mph in 8.3 seconds, which is faster than the equivalent Audi A4 Avant or Jaguar X-Type Estate. Saab has improved the 9-3's refinement overall, but while the car has very little wind noise at speed, we still noticed a slight engine vibration through the pedals. With its six-speed manual gearbox, the 1.9 TTiD returns 47.1mpg. That drops to 41.5mpg if you choose the six-speed automatic gearbox instead. However, the smooth auto is easier to live with than the slightly notchy feeling manual transmission. The 9-3's brake pedal is well weighted, while Aero models also benefit from uprated sports brakes. For those seeking a true sporting experience, Saab's front-wheel-drive chassis does not feel state-of-the-art. The company points out that as the 9-3 has a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating, there really was no need to change its underpinnings. How-ever, although it is comfortable enough, there's no disputing the fact that rivals such as the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4 offer great handling and better body control. Saab's German competitors also build better interiors. The Swedish firm freshened up the 9-3's cabin last year, and has introduced new sound-deadening material into the rooflining of this model. But the quality of the plastics used and the standard of fit and finish are simply not up to BMW or Audi standards. The comfortable and supportive heated front seats are excellent, though, and while rear legroom is not particularly generous, the cargo area is well thought out. As with the saloon, the rear seats split and fold 60:40. The boot is well shaped, and the middle section of the floor can be folded upwards and used to prevent shopping bags from sliding around. So despite its shortcomings in other areas, the 9-3 does make a practical tourer. Safety remains a typical Saab strong point, but although the 9-3's handling will satisfy most people, the car doesn't offer the crisp dynamics of some of its German rivals, nor is the build quality of its cabin as good. Saab Turbo - Established 1977. Saab didn't invent the turbo, they tamed it. Saab achieved this some 30 years ago when they developed a turbo engine with the reliability and durability required for everyday use. Since then Saab have continued to push the boundaries in turbo charging. Turbocharging allows increased power and fuel efficiency with a smaller engine.   The basic principle harnesses hot exhaust gases that are routed through a turbine causing the turbine wheel to rotate. The exhaust turbine wheel is joined to a compressor wheel which increases the airflow into the engine. More air means more fuel and more power in each cylinder. The result? You increase an engine's power with a minimal increase in its weight.   For years Saab was unusual in its extensive use of turbo technology. Now that the desire to reduce CO 2 emissions without compromising performance is becoming more widespread, turbocharging is becoming more common. Imitation is, after all, the sincerest form of flattery.   Introducing TTiD - the newest example of Saab's turbocharged thinking The development of TTiD arose from a classic engineering conundrum - how to produce a small economical diesel engine that can produce the power and responsiveness of a large petrol engine. To produce an engine that responds immediately to the throttle requires a small turbocharger. A small turbo can accelerate up to it's working speed of over 200,000 rpm almost immediately, giving a fast throttle response. However, to produce a high power output requires a much larger turbocharger that takes much longer to reach it's working speed, giving a much slower response to the throttle.   With a neat piece of lateral thinking, Saab has sidestepped the normal requirement for compromise. The new TTiD engine has not one but two turbochargers. The smaller unit operates at lower engine speeds and responds almost instantaneously, giving immediate acceleration when required. As the engine speed increases the smaller unit starts to reach it's operating limit. The engine's computerised control system automatically starts to transition to the larger turbocharger, until above 3,000rpm the larger unit takes over completely. The shift is invisible to the driver - all you notice is that you can have instant power when you need it.
