If I did sorry for the duplicate post... Im looking at buying a 1995 900 v6 with an automatic. and I was wondering what sorts of things I should look for as indications not buy. Does the v6 have any common issues etc... I've done some reading on the internet and there seems to be a real mix of people who either dont have any issues or the v6 is the worst car ever type stuff... So from what I can gather then is every 30k the timming belt should be changed aside from that any other quirks ? This particular one is low millage and has had all the service done regularly. Does anyone have any idea about the cost of this timing belt ? Thanks again. quebec128 View Public Profile Find all posts by quebec128 #7 08-02-08, 10:36 AM microcat36 Saab Crazy Join Date: Mar 2003 Location: Alloa Scotland My Saabs: Four Saab V6's and a 2.3 FTP Posts: 768 I think i am qualify to answer this, i have eight Saab's and Four are V6's, as the " if it ain't a 4 cyl turbo, it ain't a Saab" brigade, tend to knock the 6 cyl a lot .
The timing belt issue, comes from the fact that the tensioner used to fail, NOT the belt, a new design has been available for years and are reliable, i change the belts every 50,000 miles and any competent mechanic can do the change, it is not that hard, certainly a lot easier than changing the chain on the 4cyl, you can get the Gates timing belt and tensions kit in the UK for £70 and i can send you diagrams of how to change the belt from the service manual if you need.
The other thing that goes on the V6 is the oil cooler, which sits in the V on the engine, again not that hard to change if you need to.
The V6 is a good engine for fuel economy and at 175Bhp, has the instant kick the Turbo's don't have as there is no turbo to spool up, hence no turbo lag, easily tunable to 210bhp and you can fit the 3.0 V6 like Raggy did for up to a 245bhp kick., also the V6 has the reliable traction control system the 4 Cyl did not, see link below. http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=120383 __________________ Five Saab V6's, So quiet, So smooth. www.microcat.org.uk microcat36 View Public Profile Visit microcat36's homepage! What you need to replace also are the tensionner and timing sprockets as those fail and cause catastrophic engine failure. There's a common problem with the cooler leaking between the head and the block and in those cases a replacement unit including a head gasket job is required. Also check for timing cover leaks. If it has low mileage and has the maintenance records and if it has no issues presently, I say go for it. Just keep an eye on those sensitive areas The V6 is a reliable engine as long as you take care of those things hkayssi View Public Profile Find all posts by hkayssi #9 08-02-08, 12:52 PM microcat36 Saab Crazy Join Date: Mar 2003 Location: Alloa Scotland My Saabs: Four Saab V6's and a 2.3 FTP Posts: 768 Head gasket is not needed to do the oil cooler as the oil cooler sits in between the V and the heads do not come off, the only thing you need to take off is the inlet manifold and the fuel rail. __________________ Five Saab V6's, So quiet, So smooth. www.microcat.org.uk microcat36 View Public Profile Visit microcat36's homepage! Most manufacturers who use interference engines with a belt are very up front about the interval at which it should be changed. It also seems like GM has been overly nice by doing free changes until the 100k mile /160k km mark. There are many Kias and Hyundais out there going to the scrap heap because owners didn't follow the 59-60k mile belt service. 90% of the time they simply aren't worth repairing because depreciation on South Korean and Malaysian cars is so high. mryan55 View Public Profile Find all posts by mryan55 #12 08-02-08, 02:13 PM hkayssi Saab on the Brain! I think the mark was lowered by people seeing some of the timing belts blowing at that mark and slightly before that. The 30K mile is a precaution IIRC. But what they don't tell you is that it's not always the timimg belt's fault, leaks behind the timing cover make the belt oily and brittle and it could slip off or snap. hkayssi View Public Profile Find all posts by hkayssi #13 08-02-08, 02:14 PM microcat36 Saab Crazy Join Date: Mar 2003 Location: Alloa Scotland My Saabs: Four Saab V6's and a 2.3 FTP Posts: 768 There have never been any problems with the belts, it was the tensioner that went on them snapping the belt.
The most troublesome car i have had was a 2.3FTP, i needed the timing chain/balancer shaft chain, head gasket and turbo changed between 100 and 140K, if a garage had done the work, i would have been £1200-£1400 or more, three belt changes on the V6 at a garage would be £600, so it is swings and roundabouts on the costs between the 4cyl and V6, i have four V6 and they have been the most reliable cars i have had as they have no turbo's to go wrong and all the associated boost and throttle body problems the 4cyl have. __________________ Five Saab V6's, So quiet, So smooth. www.microcat.org.uk Last edited by microcat36; 08-02-08 at 02:19 PM. microcat36 View Public Profile Visit microcat36's homepage! The answer may be, when 100% QC is achieved, the solenoid controlled valve, using 42 volts... ..or maybe we can revert to a valveless two stroke.... with exact computer controlled pulses of a gas charge..
No matter what, maintenance will always be necessary.. And the inspection of related parts is very important , the oil seals, the tensioner assembly, and the cover seal...then one reads of the incurring problems when a belt is changed blindly.....without any inspection. __________________ The earthworm

Don't think that the timing chain is infallible, the one on my old turbo snapped at just 71,000 miles, followed by the turbo at 77,000,the car had a full Saab service history and compared with my current V6 was a nightmare... Andy Enright Judges How SeriousTest cars for a living and you quickly get a handle on their target clientele. Polo necked Guardianistas, cash-rich plumbers, old money on the slide or schoolgate mums you can find a car aimed at each of them. Saabs 9-3 2.8T V6 Aero is a tougher call. After driving it for a few hours, I got out, had a drink and drove it again. Still I was none the wiser, instead becoming fixated with the oleaginous, Bostonian Brahmin drawl of Loyd Grossman. "David," extended dramatic pause - "Who would drive a car like this?" Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Think about it. The 9-3, be it in Sport Saloon or SportWagon guise, tends to appeal to those customers who admire a BMW, Mercedes or Audi but who either cant quite afford them or balk slightly at the rather brash image. Saab make great play of including themselves alongside these manufacturers in an artificial construct they dub the P7 (Premium Group of 7) which also encompasses Jaguar, Volvo and Lexus, but if they were entirely honest with themselves, theyd realise that from an image perspective theyd be propping up that particular table. Thats why the lower-end Saab models sell so well. Instead of poaching business from the German premium manufacturers, they instead siphon off sales from buyers who would have previously bought cars like the Ford Mondeo, the Honda Accord, the Toyota Avensis and the Peugeot 407. Trading up to a Saab 9-3 makes all sorts of sense in this instance. Instant status and a smug sense of superiority for minimal capital outlay seems a smart piece of business. Where the story becomes a little fuzzy at the edges is when splashing out for a top-end 9-3 and they dont come any further up the scale than this 2. 8T V6 Aero variant. The Sport Saloon is priced at £27,715 with the estate pitching in at £28,715. While still not exactly nosebleed pricing, its in the same territory as some quality stuff from BMW and Mercedes or, to put it another way, youve really got to want a Saab to sign up for this car. As usual it conforms to the Saab philosophy of offering a lot more power than its rivals; in this case a turbocharged 250bhp is at your disposal. Those with a quick grasp of mental arithmetic and even a rudimentary knowledge of engineering will appreciate that 89bhp per litre isnt a huge specific output for a turbocharged engine. The limiting factor in this instance is the fact that unlike many of its P7 rivals, drive is directed to the front wheels and putting a whole heap of power through the front wheels can have rather disappointing results."Top end Saab 9-3s face a demanding market"That said, the 9-3 2.8T V6 does an excellent job of masking the fact. Theres no riotous torque-steer as you accelerate the car, the most extreme manifestation being a gentle tug at the tiller under full throttle. Likewise there seems to be little in the way of wheelspin or obvious traction control intervention, on dry tarmac at least. If you must direct drive forwards, this is the way to do it. Given that a normally aspirated 2.8-litre V6 should be good for 220bhp or so, the turbocharger doesnt have a whole lot demanded of it and works unobtrusively in the background without the whines, hisses and other audible histrionics of other cars that lean more heavily on their blowers to bump up the power figure. Saab quote a sprint to 60mph of just 6. 7 seconds for the saloon model and itll run to a top speed in excess of 155mph. Make no mistake, this is a seriously rapid car, although one suspects that motorways and sweeping A-roads are more its forte than twisty country lanes. Standard specification in Aero trim includes a lowered sports chassis, uprated brakes, a six-speed manual gearbox, 17-inch alloy wheels with options for bigger rims, and a body coloured spoiler and skirts kit. Theres also chrome detailing for the exhaust pipes and window trims, leather-faced sports seats, a beautiful sports steering wheel with leather and metallic trim and further metallic detailing around the cabin. A Saab Infotainment and premium sound system is also included as part of the pack, although youll need to stump up extra if you want the desirable six-disc in-dash CD autochanger. The Sportwagon is well worth looking into. Unlike many vehicles that campaign in this class, the Saab offers some serious carrying capacity. Theres 419 litres available with the rear seats in place and a whopping 1,273 litres of space available with the seats folded down. The recessed sub floor allows valuables to be stowed out of the view of prying eyes and can also be used to store wet or dirty gear without muddying everything else up. Despite its sporting looks, the rear hatch is actually fairly steeply raked, allowing for additional carrying capacity. This is where some rivals fall down, favouring style over practicality. Saab aim to offer both. As long as you dont mistake it for a no-compromises sportster, theres little reason why you should be disappointed by the Saab 9-3 2.8T V6 Aero. Its well built, civilised and very good value for money. Its just difficult to see where the sales are going to come from. Those armed with a little knowledge may well decry it as a rebadged and made-over Vauxhall Vectra and it would be difficult to deny its roots. Those not so savvy will likely be swayed by an entry-level BMW or Mercedes and tick the badge delete box on the order form. Who does that leave? The nebulous leftovers are what Saab seem to be pursuing with the 9-3 2.8T V6. We wish them luck.Facts At A Glance CAR: Saab 9-3 Sport Saloon 2.8T V6 Aero range PRICES: £27,715-£28,715 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 17 CO2 EMISSIONS: 239g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 6.7s / Max Speed 155mph+ FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 28.2mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front and side airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Traction Control, Stability Control, Cornering Braking Control, Saab Active Head Restraints WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height 4635/2038/1466mm Send by Messenger Email this article Print More news and reviews from Saab

window.yzq_d['HEzaN1f4eEY-']='&U=12b2a7uh8%2fN%3dHEzaN1f4eEY-%2fC%3d-1%2fD%3dOEM%2fB%3d-1%2fV%3d0'; Saab 9-5 V6 3.0 TiD RANGE Tuesday November 15 (First written on 2004-05-12) Saabs Latest Diesel May Change A Few Opinions About Oil-Burning 9-5s. Andy Enright ReportsIf the Saab 9-5 has received a slightly cool reception in this country, Saab diesels have enjoyed a less than a stellar reputation. In the last couple of years the competition in this sector has been ratcheted up a couple of notches and Saab has had to respond. The trouble with the 9-5 is that it never looked particularly cutting edge at the time of its launch in 1997, relying slightly too heavily on the heavy design language of early nineties Saabs. The latest models aim to reinterpret the theme and in the 9-5 V6 TiD, Saab hope to have a diesel that will give BMW sleepless nights. With an ever-increasing share of the executive market being accounted for by diesel sales, Saab has responded with a superb 3.0-litre V6 diesel, dubbed the 3.0 TiD which makes 176bhp yet still returns an average of nearly 38mpg. Developed in partnership with Isuzu, the engine is pleasantly refined, has an exhilarating mid-range surge although is surprisingly shy of low-end torque. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value As an indication as to how nebulous and impenetrable the arcane world of car manufacturing is, this engine will also find itself under the bonnet of Renaults Vel Satis flagship. Work that one out. The Saabs engine is a good example of its type, but is some way short of the creamy 193bhp 3.0-litre BMW unit. It probably has the drop on the 2.5-litre diesel the Bavarians use and in terms of market and finance the V6 TiD seems to shape up nicely. A BMW 525d SE will retail at £28,325 and youll need £32,225 for a 530d SE. With the 9-5 V6 TiD saloon retailing from £23,100 for the base Linear version or £25,000 and £25,300 respectively for the more directly comparable Arc and Vector trim levels, the Saab looks notably good value. If thats too much and performance isnt important, theres a four cylinder 2.2-litre TiD variant priced from £19,995. The estate (offered with both engines) compares favourably with the Touring versions of the 5 Series. Would you buy one over the BMW? If youve ever queued at the returns desk at IKEA, you may not be one of a growing band of far from gruntled Swedophobes. The design shortcomings of the not-obviously-chipboard Knackig coffee table may well have holed the 9-5s prospects below the waterline."Be amazed by the most astonishing cup-holder in the automotive world."Theres a new design director at Saab, Michael Mauer, and you may gather from the preceding paragraph that his brief is something of a toughie. Not only must he freshen the 9-5s appeal, hes got to do that without alienating core Saab customers, must attract new ones at the same time and must also satisfy the notoriously conservative paymasters at General Motors. Good luck, Mikey. The latest 9-5 has undergone no fewer than 1260 modifications, but many are decidedly subtle. The revised front grille and headlights are probably the most obvious change, although its only really apparent when parked next to an older model. The bumpers jut forward a tad further, although its not as chinny as the old Saab 900. The air dam beneath the bumper has also been subtly revised and is now a far cleaner shape. Obviously from the Sven Goran Eriksson school of Swedish subtlety, our Mr Mauer. Sit inside the car and youll probably have to take Saabs word for many of the changes. The xenon headlamps are the most obvious change, sparking up in that eerie blue which gives a brief stab of panic to most motorists who see the flash of blue light in their rear view mirrors. Improved seatbelts, better interior trim quality and a revised headlining are about the extent of the changes. Three interior themes are available, Linear, Arc and Vector. Linear is pretty functional, while Arc opts for light walnut veneers, much like an upmarket sauna. Vector is a more sporting industrial theme with soft leathers and aluminium brightwork. Aside from the most astonishing cup-holder in the automotive world (just try operating its gyroscope design only once!), there are the typical Saab design cues including the centrally mounted ignition barrel and vertiginous fascia. Its neither slick nor pretty but it feels rock solid and incredibly well thought through. In terms of cabin room, dont expect any more before, which means a decent amount of elbow room and 15.9 cu/ft of luggage capacity accessible via split-folding rear seats that also feature a ski-flap. Safety as ever, has also been a priority and all the obvious protection is there, with careful touches that even stretch to anti-whiplash head restraints and those pre-tensioning seat belts. Its under the skin that most of the benefits will be felt. The 9-5s chassis is, much as Saab wont thank us for noting, based on an extended Vauxhall Vectra platform, itself not the first place youd start to build a credible executive express. Over the years Saab have fettled this pigs ear into something that may not feel like a silk purse but comes laudably close. Whereas the old model felt quite skittery when you applied the power to the front wheels mid-corner, the latest 9-5 deploys its power far more cleanly, making it feel more of a drivers tool than the old motorway mogul ever was. Nevertheless, corner it hard and Saabs reputation for safety intervenes with the improved ABS and ESP skid control combining to quickly put a lid on any slip sliding away. Many would argue that it cuts in somewhat prematurely and theyd have a fair point, although the more lenient system employed by BMW highlights the difference in driver appeal between the two marques. With weight taken out of the subframe and more rigidity built in, the Saab feels lighter on its feet than of old, and the chassis engineers have also had a fiddle with the damper, springs and roll bar settings. The result is a far sportier drive than whilst still retaining a degree of suppleness. Body roll is now well controlled although the revised steering system is still a couple of notches from the top of the totem pole. Volvo have stolen something of a march on Saab in developing their own in-house diesel, although even the impressive Volvo D5 engine cant match the Saab unit for sheer power. With the improved chassis dynamics and prettier interiors, the Saabs beats the Volvo S80 most ways up. Its one thing to be dubbed best of the rest, but what about denting the sales of the German mainstream rivals from Mercedes, BMW and Audi? Good though the 9-5 V6 TiD is, its not markedly better in any key area and falls back in terms of bang for your badge. 1260 changes and the storys still the same. When a car as good as this cant break buyers prejudices its difficult to imagine what Saab have to do. Possibly give up and build something else. Planes. Overall rating 2 Reviews For Saab 9-5 3.0t V6 lalehamlodge 11th Sep 2008 Reviewer rating: lalehamlodge's review has yet to be rated - Be the first! Report this review Bad Points: Also some problems with the computer display. after 6 years, am now getting some small rattles around the dashboard -- I have the brushed metal one, still looks great but possibly not the best choice for rattle-free motoring.
General comments: Agree with Harry above -- have owned my Saab for 6 years since new, and it is still a joy to drive. Bags of overtaking power, brilliant handling, comfortable seats.
I get over 40mpg in mixed driving if I try to drive with a light foot, and over 50mpg on a motorway run keeping it at 60-70mpgs. That's with a full load, too - wife, 3 kids, dog, luggage, and six bottles of wine in the hidey-hole under the boot where the spare is! Read lalehamlodge's full review and ratings (120 words) harry gilfillan 1st Oct 2004 Reviewer rating: harry gilfillan's review has yet to be rated - Be the first! Report this review Absolutely brilliant peformance. Only niggle with the Saab 9-5 3.0t V6 estate car was a fault with the onboard computer display with some figures starting to not read. Bags of space and very reliable. Overall good mpg from a high performance load lugger (35 on m/way with highish speeds) and around 21 in town.
